49ers’ Kyle Shanahan Makes Major Brock Purdy Statement After Huge Contract

Throughout the majority of the 2025 NFL offseason, the San Francisco 49ers and quarterback Brock Purdy were one of the biggest storylines in the league. The two sides were working on a new contract extension for the 25-year-old quarterback, but talks were not going smoothly for quite some time.

Despite all of the rumors and outside noise that popped up, the two parties kept working on a deal.

Finally, they were able to quiet all of the rumors. Purdy received a lucrative five-year, $265 million extension from the 49ers. He'll be San Francisco's franchise quarterback for many years to come.

While the deal will pay Purdy a ton of money, it also shows just how much the franchise believes in him. After a rough 2024 season that has brought a lot of criticism down on Purdy, the team clearly isn't worried.

Speaking of the 2024 season, Purdy played in 15 games, throwing for 3,864 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, while completing 65.9 percent of his passes. He also ran for 323 yards and five more touchdowns.

His passing numbers were down from 2023, when he threw for 4,280 yards, 31 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions in 16 games. Purdy also completed 69.4 percent of his pass attempts in that season.

Following the big deal getting done between the 49ers and Purdy, head coach Kyle Shanahan has spoken out about what he wants to see from his quarterback.

"I want him to be the leader he's always been," Shanahan said. "There's no worse thing to do than ask people to do something extra just because of their contract. That's when you start making stuff up. Brock's earned his contract, and he's going to earn what he gets going forward."

Shanahan continued on, doubling down on his support for Purdy.

"He's been the same since day one and I think that's, you like to say that about a lot of people and we're never lying up here or anything, but Brock is as much like that as not just any football player I've met, but any person I've met," he said.

Purdy's story has been inspiring. He was the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft at No. 262 overall and has turned out to be a legitimate star. Many have compared him to the legendary Tom Brady for the way his career has started.

Now that he has received his first big contract, it's time for Purdy to silence all of the critics. After San Francisco missed the playoffs last season, the team will be relying on Purdy to step up and lead them back to success in 2025.
