Liverpool could use sneaky tactic in Florian Wirtz deal that could actually save them millions – opinion

Liverpool are having a very exciting summer transfer window so far.

Jeremie Frimpong is set to sign for Liverpool, while Milos Kerkez is keen to join the Reds as well.

However, the most blockbuster transfer that Liverpool could be set to seal is a deal for Florian Wirtz.

Indeed, Wirtz could be set to join Liverpool, but the details of this transfer haven’t quite been ironed out yet.

Liverpool still need to agree terms with Bayer Leverkusen to sign Wirtz, and they could pull off a sneaky trick that will ultimately save them millions of pounds if they approach this in the right way.

Liverpool could use sneaky Harvey Elliott trick to save money

There have been reports that Wirtz’s move to Liverpool could be a swap deal.

In the era of PSR, swap deals are becoming ever more popular, and this is something that could make sense for Liverpool.

According to The Daily Mail, Bayer Leverkusen are interested in Harvey Elliott, and using Elliott in a swap deal could well be a wise bit of sneaky accounting from Liverpool.

Elliott is expected to leave Liverpool this summer, and the midfielder has been valued at £40m.

However, if Liverpool were to sell Elliott for £40m, then £8m of that fee would be owed to Fulham owing to their 20% sell-on clause included when the midfielder came to Anfield.

That sell-on clause is significant, but it could be completely bypassed if Elliott is instead used in a part-exchange deal.

Liverpool could use Elliott as a makeweight to sign Wirtz, in turn negating their obligation to pay Fulham anything, while still extracting value from Elliott.

What Jurgen Klopp said about Harvey Elliott

Elliott’s time at Liverpool appears to be coming to an end, and it’s quite sad that it’s come to this.

Indeed, Elliott arrived at Anfield as a 16-year-old, and he looked like he was set to become a star at Liverpool one day.

The midfielder has carved out a respectable career, but he’s fallen behind in recent times, and now he looks set to leave.

As a boyhood Liverpool fan, Elliott wanted to spend his entire career at Anfield with Jurgen Klopp noting that he would’ve signed a 15-year deal if he could.

“I’m so happy it has worked out like it has worked out. The future is super bright for him. You see him play for England’s U21 side, like he’s that guy. He’s turning into a wonderful young man. He’s so loyal,” Klopp said.

“If you ask him tomorrow – he would sign a 15-year contract for the club. It’s nice to have boys like this around, this is really a match made in heaven. A super player.”

Unfortunately, Elliott hasn’t quite made good on Jurgen Klopp’s view of his potential, and now, he could be set to leave Anfield, and, maybe, as a part of a swap deal for Florian Wirtz.
