Jeremie Frimpong Signs for Liverpool

[Liverpool](https://liverpooloffside.sbnation.com/) have officially signed Jeremie Frimpong for £29.5m from Bayer Leverkusen on a long-term contract.

The Dutch winger’s goals at Liverpool include winning a number of trophies that he can list off for us all, and he told us, “Liverpool fans, I’m going to give my all, my energy, my work-rate and hopefully we can win together, we celebrate together, get everything together.

“I’m just excited to be here. Thank you guys for accepting me and I won’t let you guys down and I’ll give you the energy that you guys want.”

Frimpong is an exciting addition to this Liverpool side. The 24-year-old was key to Xabi Alonso’s title-winning — and almost undefeated treble-winning — season in 2023/24 at Bayer Leverkusen, and his individual and team success started drawing a lot of eyes.

It’s unclear how he will be used in Arne Slot’s system, and his arrival might see some tweaks in the tactical structure. Frimpong played as a very attack-minded fullback for Leverkusen, with strengths in his dribbling, pace, and vertical runs. His speed can be useful in recovery, but it’s impossible to ignore that the assets he has are best used going forward.

Frimpong is a smart player who sees space well, and since Liverpool _already_ overload the right side of their attack this spatial concentration won’t be unusual. It remains to be seen how (and whether) Frimpong might be deployed alongside Mohamed Salah: will he give Salah more rest or be deployed either as a right wing-back _or_ in a different tactical system?

It is, of course, notable that the 2025/26 season will be split by AFCON, with Mohamed Salah leaving during the festive new year period to play in that competition. As such, there will be a concentration of games where the “how does Frimpong fit with Salah?” question will be unimportant (though likely we’ll have answers by then, anyway).

In terms of filling space after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure, Frimpong is a bit more direct than the Scouser, with a taste for running at and dribbling past defenders. He has a dangerous low cross which can be utilized in Liverpool’s attack, but is less likely to play the dangerous through balls from deep. Though he’s used to a dynamic system, he’s also more _traditional_ in an attacking sense.

He’s also smaller. Reports vary, but Frimpong is listed between 5’6” and 5’8”, which means he’s shorter than Conor Bradley and Alexander-Arnold, and even Mohamed Salah (who is allegedly 5’9”). Though outright height can belie physical strength in challenges and in terms of holding the ball, it is inarguably a challenge when asked to defend against larger, physical players — especially in the air. This contributes to the potential for system changes: Bradley might start in defense, with shifts happening elsewhere.

Important also for Liverpool, though Frimpong is a Dutch national, he counts as a homegrown player due to his time in the [Manchester City](https://bitterandblue.sbnation.com) academy. Before moving to Leverkusen in 2021, Frimpong debuted at the senior level with Celtic in 2019.

He already looks great in a red shirt.
