Report: Liverpool want to sign ‘insane’ £59m playmaker with a ‘left foot made of gold’

Liverpool will reportedly have to fork out around £59m to sign AS Monaco attacking midfielder Maghnes Akliouche.

The 23-year-old French talent has emerged as a target despite the club's pursuit of Florian Wirtz. The Reds are closing in on the German attacker, who has agreed on personal terms, and are holding talks with Bayer Leverkusen after submitting an initial £84m (€100m) proposal.

Wirtz could follow Jeremie Frimpong through the door amid his Leverkusen teammate sealing a £30m move on Friday (May 30). The Dutch right-back has replaced Trent Alexander-Arnold and become the first of what many expect to be several summer signings.

CaughtOffside reports that Akliouche could leave Monaco this summer for around £50-60m (€60-70m) and Liverpool are the club showing the strongest interest. It would be an intriguing acquistion if pulled off given the Wirtz pursuit which suggests the newly-crowned champions are keen to strengthen Arne Slot's midfield.

The 12-cap France U21 international spent this past season on the right wing but can play several roles, including in attacking midfield. He impressed for his country at last summer's Olympic Games, earning a glowing review from his manager, Thierry Henry:

"What impresses me most about him is the way he presses and the persistence with which he searches for the ball."

Manchester United, Manchester City, Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur are also monitoring Akliouche, but no club has initiated talks. He has three years left on his contract at Monaco, where he's spent his professional career and become one of their star players with his "left foot made of gold", as a scout puts it.

There is a chance that the "insane" Akliouche will remain in France, with Paris Saint-Germain also keeping tabs. But Monaco will likely want to sell abroad if a departure were to ensue this summer.
