The Bryce Huff experiment only lasted a single season with the Philadelphia Eagles, but it easily became one of the worst moves made in their current era of dominance.
Now, it's over.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Friday afternoon that the Eagles were shipping the former New York Jets edge rusher to the San Francisco 49ers for a late-round draft pick. Huff had reworked his deal to make a trade possible.
In San Francisco, he will join his former head coach, Robert Saleh, who was hired as the 49ers' defensive coordinator after a four-year run with the Jets.
The former Memphis product thrived in Saleh's wide-nine defense. Huff recorded 10 sacks in 2023 with Gang Green and 17.5 in four seasons with the Jets. After signing a three-year, $51 million deal with the Eagles last offseason, the hope was that Huff would continue his pass-rushing dominance.
It never ended up happening, though.
Huff struggled to play the run in Vic Fangio's system and later dealt with injuries that kept him off the field. Huff recorded just 2.5 sacks in 2024 and was a healthy scratch during the team's win in Super Bowl LIX.
Since that win, Huff has been away from the organization including missing all offseason workouts. It was clear he wanted a fresh start away from Philadelphia.
Now, the Eagles have found a trade partner that fits what Huff wants, while also reportedly saving over $15 million in cap space this offseason and taking him completely off the books after the 2025 season.
Huff wanted to go to a team that better fit his skill set. Now, he will get that chance.
