Manchester United’s latest backroom change broke earlier this afternoon – with the departure of first team coach Andreas Georgson now confirmed.

According to Laurie Whitwell’s post on X, the 43-year-old Swede has left United after holding talks with both technical director Jason Wilcox and new manager Ruben Amorim.

Georgson, who was brought in last summer by Erik ten Hag and Wilcox, was primarily responsible for set-piece planning and individual player development.

However, following discussions after the post-season tour of Malaysia and Hong Kong, it was agreed that there is now less room for those responsibilities under Amorim’s new coaching setup.

It is believed that Georgson’s role had become increasingly redundant, as per Whitwell’s post.

Especially with Amorim already having his own assistant, Carlos Fernandes, who is in charge of set pieces.

Georgson had been retained after Ten Hag’s departure in October 2024.

However, the shift in tactical structure and reduced coaching overlap meant there was clearly no space or defined role left for him going forward.

This decision also appears to fall in line with wider cost-cutting measures at the club, as United look to avoid an inflated coaching staff, backroom team, or playing squad under Amorim’s streamlined vision.

Georgson, who previously worked with Wilcox at Southampton, exits having played a part in United’s set-piece strategy over a turbulent campaign.

The former Arsenal and Brentford coach acknowledged the end of his chapter in Manchester with a heartfelt message, thanking Erik ten Hag, Jason Wilcox and Ruben Amorim for the opportunity.

With Fernandes now overseeing set pieces, United fans will be watching closely to see how the team evolves on dead-ball routines under Amorim’s trusted assistant.

Andreas Georgson, coach brought in last summer by Erik ten Hag + Jason Wilcox, primarily for set pieces, is leaving #MUFC following discussions with Wilcox + Ruben Amorim. Agreed less space to work in new set-up.
