Atletico Madrid have confirmed that Fernando Torres will continue his journey as the head coach of the club’s B team until 2027
The former Liverpool striker took charge of the the reserve squad in the Primera Federación last season.
Torres’ job is to nurture and elevate the budding talents within the club’s ranks.
He has done a fine job in one year, with Atlético B coming painfully close to clinching a playoff spot in Group 2 of the Primera RFEF.
Torres, journey as a coach began humbly with the club’s Juvenil A coaching staff in the 2021-22 season.
He quickly rose to head coach by the next year. While still getting his coaching badges and working under Juvenil A coach Ricardo Ortega, Torres and Ortega led the team won two league titles, a Copa de Campeones, and a mesmerizing run to the 2022 Youth League Final Four.
In a heartfelt gesture of trust and expectation, Atletico have now extended Torres tenure with the B team for another two years.
The former Anfield star signed the renewal right next to Miguel Ángel Gil, solidifying the club’s faith in his strategic prowess.
Many fans seeing Fernando Torres as the next Atletico Madrid coach. The former Liverpool star is well-loved at the club and could step up another level when Diego Someone finally departs the club.
Incidentally, Torres is not the only former Liverpool man that will be plying his trade as a B team coach in Spain from next season.
Former Reds defender Alvaro Arbeloa was recently confirmed as the coach of Real Madrid’s B team.
Like Torres, Arbeloa has been with the Real Madrid’s youth team, with whom he recently won the 2024–25 La Liga Juvenil title. It was their first league championship since the 2019–20 season.
As things stand, both ex-teammates will compete against each other in the Primera Federación next season.
