Jeremie Frimpong has revealed Virgil van Dijk offered him an insight into the "expectations" that come with playing for Liverpool before he completed his £29.5m move to Anfield.

The 24-year-old put pen to paper on a five-year deal on Friday after the Reds triggered the release clause in his Bayer Leverkusen contract earlier this month. In signing for the Reds, Frimpong joins fellow Dutchmen Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, Ryan Gravenberch and, of course, Arne Slot at Anfield.

And the high-flying full-back has revealed that he has already been informed of what to expect at the home of the Premier League champions by international and, now, Anfield team-mate Van Dijk.

Speaking to LFCTV after signing on the dotted lines, Frimpong said: "Virgil called me and told me a little bit more about Liverpool, and the expectations, all the type of things.

"It made me feel like the guys are gonna welcome me good, that’s what I expect from Virgil - how he is in the national team. He’s a big character, captain. He told me good things."

Since leaving Manchester City due to a lack of first-team opportunities in 2019, Frimpong has won a domestic treble with Celtic and played a key role in Bayer Leverkusen's first-ever Bundesliga title triumph.

Now, the Dutchman wants to add to his collection of medals and win as many trophies as possible, including the Premier League, during his time at Anfield.

"For me, everywhere I’ve been I’ve always won things," added Frimpong. "It’s always been the league, cups and the league, so I’ve always won trebles. So yes, I want to win trebles, I want to win trophies – I play football to win trophies. I want to win as many trophies as possible."

Holland's back-to-back World Cup qualifiers at the start of next month will be Frimpong's last act until he joins up with his new team-mates at the AXA Training Centre on July 8.

And it's fair to say that there is one Reds player in particular that the Dutchman is looking forward to sharing a dressing room with on Merseyside.

"Playing with world-class players as a footballer is a great feeling, it’s a privilege, like, ‘I’m going to be next to Mo Salah.’ Not just him, the whole Liverpool squad," said Frimpong.

"Just Liverpool in general, this is a privilege, a blessing that I can be part of it. But I can’t wait to link up with him – hopefully we link up well. I’m excited for these things, 100 per cent."
