David De Gea has signed a new contract with Fiorentina that will keep him at the Italian club until the summer of 2028.

A club statement read: "ACF Fiorentina is pleased to announce that David De Gea's contract has been extended to June 30, 2028. The Spanish goalkeeper joined the club last summer, having previously played for Atletico Madrid and Manchester United. In his first season he made 42 appearances and kept 11 clean sheets."

The veteran had attracted interest from AS Monaco and Bayern Munich, but after revitalising his career in Florence, he chose to commit his future to 'La Viola.'

Reacting to the news, De Gea simply shared Fiorentina's post and wrote: 'Forza Viola.'

Before signing his new contract, De Gea admitted he was taking his future at the club one day at a time.

He said: "I take it day by day. I’m very happy in Florence and I’m having a lot of fun in Italian football. I hope to get the best with my group."

De Gea’s 12-year stint at Old Trafford came to an end in the summer of 2023, when he departed as a free agent. Although a new contract was initially planned, United’s hierarchy ultimately decided against it.

The 34-year-old spent a year without a club before joining Fiorentina last summer. He signed a one-year contract reportedly worth €1.2 million (£1 million), but the agreement included an option to extend his stay with a doubled salary, according to Football Italia.

After another solid season in which he kept 11 clean sheets and helped Fiorentina secure a sixth-place finish in Serie A, the Italian side will now compete in the Europa Conference League qualifiers.
