The Pittsburgh Steelers have cut defensive end Blake Mangelson, the team announced on Friday. Mangelson was one of the last undrafted free agents signed before rookie minicamp, but is now looking to land elsewhere.
Mangelson was originally slated to attend the Minnesota Vikings’ rookie minicamp on a tryout basis but instead signed with the Steelers before their rookie minicamp.
Mangelson played all four years of his collegiate career with the Cougars. 2024 was his most productive season, posting two sacks, an interception, six tackles for loss, and 37 tackles.
In his career, Mangelson’s signature trait was fitting in as a run stuffer while also demonstrating an aptitude for battling down balls at the line of scrimmage.
He measured in at 6-foot-5, 279 pounds at Big 12 Pro Day, which profiles as a tweener type. Mangelson could be viewed as a 5-technique, but he might also have some ability to stand up on the edge.
He ran a 5.01 40-yard dash with a 1.70 10-yard split on Big 12 Pro Day. Mangelson added 22 reps on the bench, a 7.56 3-cone, 4.58 short shuttle, 29.5-inch vertical jump, and a 9-foot-3-inch broad jump.
The Steelers now have an open roster spot to make a move as they see fit before the second week of OTAs start next week.
