The big news out of the NovaCare Complex in Philadelphia Friday afternoon had nothing to do with their OTA practices.
It had everything to do with a player who was not in attendance for those workouts.
Bryce Huff, the edge rusher who was signed by the team last offseason for $51 million over three years, was traded to the San Francisco 49ers.
As with any move like this, there are a lot of winners and losers as part of the deal.
Today, we'll break down the big ones here:
Winners
Bryce Huff
Huff was a square peg in a round hole in Philadelphia. There's really no other way to put it. With this trade, he gets some solid money and goes to a 49ers team that has his old head coach on staff in Robert Saleh.
Huff comes out as a major winner.
Jalyx Hunt
If the team wasn't high on the former third-round pick, Huff would still be on the roster. The fact that he was traded shows how high the Eagles are on Hunt going into his second season.
Howie Roseman
Even when he whiffs on a free agent, Roseman finds ways to win. The Eagles saved $15 million by reworking Huff's deal and shipping him in a post-June 1 move.
The team is in better shape now with extra cap space and draft picks. That's what makes Roseman a winner here.
Losers
Mykel Williams
The 49ers drafted Williams with the 11th overall pick. Huff is used as a situational edge rusher. There's a legitimate chance the rookie edge rusher won't be used as much as expected now that Robert Saleh has his old edge rusher back with him. It'll be something to monitor this year.
Jeffrey Lurie
There's going to be a point where Lurie's money has to run out, right? The Eagles owner continues to write huge checks to free agents and top players. The fact he has to pay off over $7 million to a player that didn't work out from the beginning isn't always the best for him.
Atlanta Falcons
Jeff Ulbrich is running the defense in Atlanta. He, too, was able to utilize Huff well in New York. The fact that the Falcons didn't acquire him may be a whiff that could come back to bite the franchise in 2025.
