The goalkeeper position is one of our lesser priorities this summer as media reports would have us believe, but there is still a logjam at the position that needs to be addressed. Robert Sánchez, Filip Jörgensen, Đorđe Petrović, and perhaps even Mike Penders are vying for the two goalkeeper spots for next season.
Sánchez has improved his shot-stopping and cross-claiming numbers this season, but his poor distribution and propensity for errors with his feet make him a liability for Enzo Maresca’s possession-focused setup. Conversely, while Jörgensen is great with his feet, he needs further work on the traditional aspects of goalkeeping.
On current form, Strasbourg’s Player of the Year, Đorđe Petrović may just be the best available option, not just within our ranks, but perhaps in the entire market, with Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior going as far as to call him a “world-class goalkeeper”. Therefore, it is a surprise that there is a lack of clarity on the situation, with the Guardian noting that we may sign a new goalkeeper this summer. What happens to Petrović then?
According to L’Equipe (via GFFN), a return to Ligue 1 may be on the cards for the Serbia international, with AS Monaco reportedly interested in signing him, and Petrović being open to the move. However, Chelsea’s €25m valuation would likely be a hindrance. In addition to Petrović, the Principality club are also keeping an eye on former Chelsea boy Marcin Bułka, and former Manchester United man David De Gea (who has signed a new contract with Fiorentina since the publication of that report).
And speaking of goalkeepers, Kepa Arrizabalaga might finally leave for good this summer, with his £5m release clause making him an affordable option for clubs. Bournemouth seemingly made an attempt to keep him permanently, but he and his entourage have other plans, as per Sky Sport Italia.
Meanwhile, on the academy side of things, Teddy Sharman-Lowe, whose performances at League Two side Doncaster Rovers last season impressed the Blues’ hierarchy, is set to be on the move again. According to Football Insider and Football League World, the youngster is close to joining League One side Bolton Wanderers, which will be preceded by him signing a new contract with Chelsea.
Kepa Arrizabalaga will be available on the market for £5m release clause. Bournemouth made an attempt to keep him permanently, but parties are currently looking for other options. One to follow as multiple clubs are interested. #CFC #AFCB pic.twitter.com/9gQvftWMGE
