£35m star emerges, relegation agony: What happened to every player Newcastle United sold this…

Newcastle United are eager to become better sellers in the world of PSR.

They were nearly punished by the Premier League’s financial rules last summer, scrambling to comply with PSR.

It almost resulted in Newcastle selling Anthony Gordon, such was their desperation to raise funds.

The Magpies eventually got the money they needed, with Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh leaving.

As the 2024/25 season draws to a close, it is time to reflect on how they, and the other players who departed St James’ Park this season, have done since leaving Newcastle United.

Elliot Anderson

Eddie Howe did not want to lose Elliot Anderson. In fact, Newcastle wanted Anderson to sign a new contract before his sudden departure.

The Newcastle United manager had so much faith in Anderson, yet was forced to let him join Nottingham Forest during the summer for £35million.

In truth, it has been a brilliant move for the midfielder. He has played more for Nottingham Forest than he would have for Newcastle, with Anderson becoming an integral part of Nuno Espirito’s midfield.

Of all the players who permanently left St James’ Park this season, Anderson has been the most impressive.

Yankuba Minteh

Without playing a single minute in black and white, Newcastle got £33million for Yankuba Minteh.

It was a shame to see him leave the Magpies, at a time when the club is crying out for a right winger like him.

Newcastle have seen first hand what Minteh is capable of, with the Gambia international scoring in both of his appearances against the Magpies. On both occasions, Minteh’s celebration was confusing.

While Minteh has done well for Brighton, he has proved how raw he is. All the while, Newcastle’s own wingers have performed better than the 20-year-old.

But he has done well for Fabian Hurzeler’s side, with Minteh scoring seven goals and providing five assists in his first season in English football.

Ryan Fraser

In August 2024, Ryan Fraser finally left Newcastle United on a permanent deal to join Southampton. It brought an end to an unhappy Toon career, with Fraser falling out with Eddie Howe.

The Scotland international has had a season to forget at St Mary’s, making just eight appearances. His last came in a 3-1 loss against his former side Newcastle, with Fraser eventually suffering relegation with Southampton.

A season to forget for the wee man.

Miguel Almiron

Newcastle United sold Miguel Almiron for £10million in January, with his return to Atlanta United handing the Magpies a PSR boost.

It was the right time for Almiron to leave, but it has not been a fairy-tale return to the MLS.

Since moving back to Atlanta United, Almiron has scored three goals and provided one assist, but his team have only won four league games so far all season.

Jamie Miley

While Newcastle want to build their team around Lewis Miley, older brother Jamie departed the club in January.

The 21-year-old signed for National League side Hartlepool United, with Lewis regularly going to watch his sibling.

Jamie Miley made 16 appearances for Hartlepool in the second half of the season, with his new club finishing 11th in the fifth tier of English football.
