Manchester United are in the market for a new striker in the summer
The Red Devils have missed out on European football completely after losing the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur. Even with the lack of European football and subsequent financial restraints, Sporting CP ace Viktor Gyokeres remains the club’s dream target but there is the appreciation that could prove a very difficult deal to do due to United’s current position.
Man Utd ‘in talks’ over swap deal for Victor Osimhen
According to Foot Mercato, United have turned their attention to Napoli striker Victor Osimhen and are in talks with the Serie A champions over a potential swap deal this summer.
The Nigerian international will leave Naples this summer after spending the last season on loan at Turkish club Galatasaray. It has been claimed that United are willing to trade Rasmus Hojlund as a potential makeweight in order to get a deal done for Osimhen but Napoli also want £36m.
Hojlund joined United from Atalanta for £72m but has struggled at Old Trafford, particularly during the most recent campaign. Osimhen scored 36 goals and provided eight assists in 40 appearances in Turkey, compared to just 10 goals in 52 games for Hojlund.
Although Osimhen is clearly more prolific, Napoli are ready to sell him but there is also interest from clubs in the Saudi Pro League. Osimhen has been hailed as one of the best in the world in his position by Alvaro Morata, who was his teammate in Turkey. He said: “Osimhen is a great person and one of the best centre forwards in the world.”
Where Victor Osimhen would fit in at Man Utd
There is no doubt the Nigerian international would instantly improve United’s attack and alongside Matheus Cunha could help solve the team’s lack of goals. Ruben Amorim’s side scored just 44 goals in 38 Premier League games and ended the campaign with a goal difference of minus 10.
Cunha is poised to make the move to United after an agreement was reached with Wolves over the payments for his £62.5m release clause. Osimhen has been a prolific goal-scorer for a number of seasons, and at the age of 26 is entering his prime years.
After 36 goals in the most recent campaign, he scored 17 in the previous one with 31 during 2022-23 season as Napoli won the Serie A title. Osimhen would be a starter for the Red Devils so the club may feel the time is right to offload Hojlund - although the sticking point could be the added £36m on top of the swap deal considering the money that was forked out for Hojlund when he joined United.
