Man Utd coach hired by Erik ten Hag departs after post-season tour, ‘this period of my career…’

Andreas Georgson’s departure from Manchester United was announced following the post-season tour of Asia.

Ever since Sir Jim Ratcliffe became co-owner at Manchester United, Ineos have not been afraid to make changes. There will be more evidence of that this summer.

It’s no secret that United’s first team has been struggling on the pitch, especially after finishing 15th in the Premier League and enduring their first season in three years without a trophy.

Ruben Amorim requires patience and support if he is to have any chance of success at Old Trafford. Still, he also needs to create the right environment for his players to develop and maximise their potential.

That involves finding the right staff and players, as well as saying goodbye to those who no longer fit in with the plan for the team. Those decisions tend to come down to Ineos along with Amorim, who brought most of his staff with him to United from Sporting CP.

Andreas Georgson leaves Manchester United

Shortly after United beat Hong Kong 3-1 at the Hong Kong Stadium, Andreas Georgson left his role as first-team coach.

The Swede joined United in July 2024 from Norwegian top-flight side Lillestrom, where he was head coach.

Georgson had previously worked in England during spells with Southampton, Arsenal and Brentford, and in Sweden with Malmo.

The 43-year-old was initially in charge of United’s set-pieces after being brought to the club by Erik ten Hag.

After becoming United’s head coach in November, Amorim decided to take that responsibility away from Georgson, before handing it over to Carlos Fernandes.

Following discussions with Amorim and Ineos chiefs, Georgson will leave United in search of a new job elsewhere in football. Respected journalist Laurie Whitwell claims the reason given for the departure is due to having less room in the new working space provided to the first team.

What did Georgson say about leaving Man Utd?

Most football coaches nowadays bring in their staff, and it was always clear that Georgson was not one of Amorim’s picks.

In a short message to announce his departure, Georgson spoke about his ‘fantastic’ experiences at Old Trafford, even after such a ‘tough season’.

Speaking to the United website, Georgson said: “It has been a fantastic experience, serving as first-team coach at Manchester United, and I will always be proud of my association with such a great football club.

“This period of my career has now come to an end, as I leave to find a new challenge elsewhere. While excited about the opportunities ahead, I am sad to be leaving so many great colleagues and friends at Carrington, who make Manchester United truly special.

“Even during such a tough season, the professionalism and dedication of the players and staff never wavered, and I know there will be better times ahead.”

United’s technical director Jason Wilcox added: “Andreas has been a valued member of our men’s first-team coaching set-up over the past year, and we are grateful for his significant contribution.

“He leaves with our thanks and best wishes for the next stage of his career.”

With Ten Hag now working at Bayer Leverkusen, the coaching duo could link up again at some stage in their careers. Georgson may want to challenge himself in the managerial hotseat again.
