Plan to reward player for ‘remarkable season’ – Move to Aston Villa may have now passed him by

Sporting Club de Portugal forward Pedro Goncalves is set for an extended stay at the club, and not the move to Aston Villa which has long been gestating.

That’s [according to Jornal de Noticias](https://www.jn.pt), who report that Sporting plan to renew the 26-year-old’s deal this summer as reward for a ‘remarkable season’.

Goncalves has long been linked with a move to the Premier League as he’s impressed in Portugal, particularly at Portugal where he has 82 goals and 57 assist sin 198 games to date.

Aston Villa have always been at the front of the queue for him but never made the final push and that may not happen now. Indeed, any move to Aston Villa appears to have passed him by.

That’s because Jornal de Noticias report that Sporting plan to improve the midfielder’s contract this summer to ensure he remains at the club. It would also be reward for what they think has been a remarkable season for the 26-year-old.

He already has a contract until 2027 and a release clause worth €80m and the plan is to now reward him financially with improved terms. He earns over €1m a year at this moment in time.

Any improvement is being done to ward off interest from Aston Villa and Bayer Leverkusen and perhaps ensure that long gestating move simply doesn’t happen.
