Bayern legend leaves Liverpool sweating over Cody Gakpo future after eight-word claim

Bayern Munich are keen to sign a new left winger in the summer, and they have earmarked Liverpool winger Cody Gakpo as a potential option.

Gakpo has enjoyed a fantastic 2024/25 campaign with the Reds and is a key member of Arne Slot’s side that won the Premier League title.

Christian Falk told CF Bayern this week that Bayern are interested in Gakpo, and the Reds winger is high on their transfer wishlist.

Sky Germany journalist, Florian Plettenberg, claimed earlier this week that Gakpo could leave Anfield if Liverpool receive a very good offer.

The 26-year-old winger contributed to 24 goals (in all competitions) for the Reds this season, and it does not come as a big surprise that Bayern are showing keen interest in him.

Bayern legend Mark van Bommel said at a Pepsi event on Thursday that Gakpo is a “very good finisher” and a “real goal threat”.

Van Bommel coached Gakpo at PSV Eindhoven, and he knows his compatriot very well. The Dutchman sent a strong eight-word message that “Dutch players have always been good at Bayern”, while speaking about Bayern’s interest in the player.

“Cody is doing very well for Liverpool and also for our national team,” said Van Bommel, as quoted by Bild.

“He’s a very fast winger who performs brilliantly on his own. What’s special is that he’s also a very good finisher. He’s a real goal threat.

“In addition to his footballing qualities, Gakpo is Dutch – and Dutch players have always been good at Bayern. But I’m not on Bayern’s scouting team.”

Falk noted that Bayern have been maintaining contact to sign Gakpo, and Van Bommel’s latest comments could send a strong message to the club.

Difficult to sign Cody Gakpo

Bayern were ready to pay a massive transfer fee to sign Florian Wirtz, which means there is money to spend in the summer.

While Gakpo would cost less than Wirtz, Liverpool are still expected to demand a high transfer fee for him. He has emerged as a key player under Slot, and it would require a really tempting offer for Liverpool to consider selling him.

Bayern are interested in signing Brighton & Hove Albion’s Kaoru Mitoma, and he is a more realistic target for the German giants.
