The five players who have played their last game for Newcastle United - as it stands

Newcastle United have decisions to make on several players ahead of the 2025-26 season.

Some players have played their last games for Newcastle United.

As it stands, Newcastle are set to lose a handful of players at the end of next month with contracts coming to an end and a transfer deal already triggered.

Last week, it was also confirmed Dan Burn had penned fresh terms, taking his stay at St James’ Park until 2027.

However, there are still players facing an uncertain future.

Callum Wilson - out of contract

Wilson appeared to bid farewell to supporters after the full-time whistle against last Sunday but Howe hasn’t ruled out the 33-year-old staying.

Newcastle have opted against triggering the 33-year-old one-year extension, instead entering negotiations about a new deal that is slightly more incentive-based.

Howe explained: “Well, let's wait and see. We're going to sit down and talk with his representatives.

“What I can say is Callum Wilson is and has been just an incredible footballer for Newcastle, someone who epitomises the spirit that's got us to where we are. Really professional, brave. I mean, to come here and be the number nine in the manner and the moment that he did in the club's history, it was a difficult moment.

“The club needed hope and Callum gave them hope. He led the line with that responsibility and the pressure that that role brings unbelievably well. He brings a positivity to the group, he's a leader within the changing room. He's just been incredible and let's wait and see what happens.

“It was great to see him have that relationship with the supporters. There's still so much respect there between the two.

“He's someone I just respect immensely. I've seen the struggles that he's had in his career, and I've also seen the successes. I've seen the development.

“He's never someone you'd want to lose from the group but obviously, there's challenges that we face as a football club. Financial challenges with PSR, with a whole host of different decisions to make. And that's why I said, let's wait and see what happens.”

John Ruddy - out of contract

Ruddy signed a one-year contract after leaving Birmingham City on a free transfer last summer. He is yet to make a first-team appearance, though that was always likely as fourth-choice goalkeeper.

But considering the positive impact the 38-year-old has made behind the scenes, Howe may hand him a new deal.

Speaking in February, Howe said: “John has been brilliant behind the scenes. He has fully embraced everything we’ve asked him to do. He’s at youth games. He’s really invested in trying to help people.

“Every player I’m sure he’s used his experience in some way. John has been a vital part of what we’ve done this year.”

Mark Gillespie - out of contract

Gillespie has only made three appearances for Newcastle, his last coming in September 2020. But similar to Ruddy, Howe values the goalkeeper’s contribution behind the scenes.

The 33-year-old has signed one-year contract extensions in the last two summers.

Lloyd Kelly - joining Juventus permanently

Kelly only joined Newcastle as a free agent last summer on a five-year deal but after a limited number of first-team appearances was loaned to Serie A giants Juventus in January.

The agreement included a £20million obligation to buy, which has already been triggered due to the 26-year-old reaching a certain number of appearances.

Jamal Lewis - out of contract

Lewis spent the first half of the season on loan at Brazilian giants Sao Paulo but saw his spell cut short after just six appearances because of an ankle injury that required surgery.

The 27-year-old is still injured ahead of his contract expiring on June 30. He has made 36 appearances - the last coming two years ago - since arriving from Norwich City for £15million in 2020.
