Arsenal’s failure to secure a clinical striker last summer ultimately proved costly in their pursuit of silverware this season. Kai Havertz, deployed as a central forward, failed to deliver the consistent goal output needed to push the Gunners over the line in the Premier League title race.

The German managed just nine league goals in 23 appearances—a modest return compared to the league’s elite marksmen such as Mohamed Salah, Alexander Isak, and Erling Haaland.

Now, it appears that after years of fans calling for a true No. 9, Arsenal may finally be listening.

According to Portuguese outlet Correio da Manhã, via the Evening Standard, Arsenal have submitted a significant bid for Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyökeres. The offer is reportedly worth over £58 million for the Swedish international, who has enjoyed a sensational season in Portugal.

Gyökeres has scored a staggering 54 goals in all competitions, including 39 in 33 Primeira Liga matches, as he led Sporting to a second consecutive league title and their third in six years.

The report also states that Arsenal representatives met with Gyökeres’ agent, Hasan Cetinkaya, at the Women’s Champions League final—where Arsenal defeated Barcelona—in Lisbon last weekend. During the meeting, they are said to have presented their formal offer, which will be delivered to Sporting president Frederico Varandas later this week.

Rui Borges: “Truly Exceptional”

Gyökeres has been among Europe’s most prolific strikers for two straight seasons, having scored 43 goals last year and adding 15 assists across competitions. Speaking in April, Sporting manager Rui Borges praised the 26-year-old in glowing terms.

“There are no words: it is unlikely that another player of his quality will emerge in our league over the next few years. He is clearly above average,” said Borges. “Sporting recognised his talent, and here we are. Fortunately, we have him at Sporting. We must make the most of the time we have with him because he is truly exceptional.”

Borges also hinted at a possible summer transfer.

“Viktor is a game-changer, and he will continue to be, whether with us or elsewhere. His quality is undeniable; it is phenomenal,” he added.

With Arsenal’s need for a proven finisher more urgent than ever, the Gunners will be hoping that Gyökeres can bring his world-class form to the Emirates and help transform near-misses into trophies.
