'Going to be interesting': Former Liverpool CEO lifts lid on Wrexham's summer transfer window

Hollywood-backed Wrexham are aiming to secure successive promotions to the Premier League in the upcoming Championship season.

Wrexham’s remarkable rise from Non-League to the Championship is a story fitting for their Hollywood owners.

With backing from Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, and former Sunderland head coach Phil Parkinson at the helm, Wrexham became the first side in history to win three successive promotions in the top five tiers of English football.

After securing second tier status for the 2025/26 Championship campaign, alongside Tom Brady’s Birmingham City, Wrexham are hoping to continue their script this season and reach the Premier League for the first time in the club’s 161-year history.

If Wrexham are to do so, their recruitment in the ongoing transfer window must be up to standard, and the former Liverpool CEO believes it will be an “interesting” summer at The Racecourse.

Wrexham poised for ‘interesting’ summer transfer window ahead of 25/26 Championship

Given the gulf in quality between League One and the Championship, significant investment in Parkinson’s squad is needed this summer, with top flight promotion set as the target for Wrexham.

The EFL transfer window opens for business soon, as Birmingham and Wrexham are battling for Danny Ings and the Red Dragons continue to be linked with a host of high-profile names.

Earlier this month, Wrexham were plotting a record-breaking move for Tom Cairney, highlighting their financial firepower for next season.

Former Liverpool FC CEO Peter Moore, has been involved with Wrexham in an advisory capacity to owners Reynolds and McElhenney, and he believes the summer window will be an “interesting” one at The Racecourse.

When asked about Wrexham’s transfer window, Moore told TalkSport: “There was a lot of skepticism that these Hollywood types, that they’re going to get the club, they’re going to build its value, do a documentary, and then flip it, that couldn’t be any further from the case.

“It’s going to be interesting because they were in Non-League three years ago, and if you watch the documentary, Sean Harvey takes you through the wage structure in series one,

“But, you know, Championship to Premier League, it’s a whole different story so we’ll see what Rob and Ryan, I think they’re going to have to get external investment.”

Parkinson has revealed Wrexham’s transfer policy following their promotion, which will be concerned with targeting loans from Premier League clubs, with several names already linked.

Wrexham need to add proven Championship quality in transfer window

The newest name linked with Wrexham is Aaron Cresswell, with the West Ham full-back soon to be out of contract this summer. However, they face competition from newly-promoted Leeds United for his signature.

Rumours have also emerged recently that the Red Dragons are targeting Welshman Ben Davies, who is also soon to be out of contract, and could arrive on a free from Spurs this summer.

In terms of outgoings, Wrexham have a big decision to make in the window, as Wigan Athletic are tracking Paul Mullin, who could be moved on despite his club legend status.

Wrexham’s summer business will be imperative to their promotion aspirations. The Red Dragons’ long-standing absence from the top flight, combined with Parkinson’s 18% win rate as a Championship manager, places even more emphasis on the club’s summer dealings.
