Scottie Scheffler was unable to hide his emotions after NFL star Peyton Manning smoked a tee shot into a house. Playing with the world No.1 earlier this week, Manning showed exactly why he was a Hall of Fame quarterback and not a professional golfer.
While it might’ve been the pressure of playing in front of the two-time Masters champion that got to Manning, the former American footballer had a sheepish look about him as he stepped back from the wayward tee shot. Having swung hard, Manning immediately shouted “fore, fore,” indicating the effort had gone awry.
The next sound that was picked up on the video shared to social media was the hefty clattering of the ball against a house. Scheffler, unable to hold his laughter in, keeled over in disbelief that his playing partner had smacked his ball so far off the fairway.
It wasn’t only on the course where Manning was catching strays, with the superstar’s younger brother taking to X to make a sarcastic comment. Posting on the social media site, Eli Manning wrote: “I’m so proud.”
Scheffler had to up his game ahead of the weekend though, given he was taking part in the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club. Finishing his opening two rounds in fourth, four under par, Scheffler said on Friday: "When the rough gets this wet, any time you hit it in the rough the lies are going to be really bad and it's going to be really challenging. So it's definitely important to keep the ball in play.
"If I had holed a few more putts it probably would have been a little bit of a different score. I felt like I was hitting my lines out there and definitely felt better with my ball striking. Two under in these conditions was not bad."
There was no sign of Masters champion Rory McIlroy at the event, with the Irishman having been a shock absentee. So much so, host Jack Nicklaus was left “surprised” by his no-show, with the golf legend saying: "It surprised me but guys have got schedules and things they do. I haven't talked to him for him to tell me why or why not. It's just his call. I made a lot of calls when I played to play or not play and sometimes it wasn't as popular as people thought it was. But sometimes you have to make those calls. I don't hold anything against Rory for that."
