Manchester United winger Marcus Rashford has sent his support to former teammate David de Gea after he agreed a contract extension at Serie A club Fiorentina.
De Gea spent the 2023/24 season without a club after he was released by Erik ten Hag. United made this decision as they wanted to replace him with a goalkeeper who was more adept at playing out from the back.
Without a club, the Spaniard continued to keep up his fitness regime and often trained at National League club Altrincham to prepare himself for his next challenge which arrived last summer. Fiorentina decided to take a gamble on the shot stopper and secured him for the 2024/25 campaign.
The 34-year-old went on to make 42 appearances for the club this season keeping 11 clean sheets in the process. He also played his part in the club's run to the Conference League semi-finals but they ultimately fell short.
Fiorentina finished sixth in Serie A and will go into the Conference League qualifiers next season and will be able to call upon De Gea for that campaign. The ex-United man signed a new three-year contract in Italy this week to commit his long-term future to the club.
Unsurprisingly, news of De Gea's new contract has been met positively by some of his old teammates. Among those to wish him well was captain Bruno Fernandes who wrote: "Number one," in the comments section and Rashford who shared a love heart emoji.
Unlike De Gea, Rashford's future is far from certain for next season. The winger spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa and MEN Sport understands that he does not have a future at Old Trafford.
Villa do have a £40m option to buy Rashford this summer but they do not have first refusal on his services. Barcelona have confirmed they are interested in Rashford but it remains to be seen if they can launch a bid that United deem acceptable.
