Report: Liverpool transfer news: 22-year-old rejects Premier League move for one specific reason

Liverpool attacker Harvey Elliott has rejected the chance to move to Nottingham Forest during the summer transfer window, according to a report.

The 22-year-old's future has naturally been in the headlines after he started just two Premier League games in the 2024-25 season, and none before the Reds clinched the title.

Liverpool expert David Lynch believes that Elliott may have now started his last game for Arne Slot's side, as numerous clubs both in England and abroad have been credited with a serious interest.

Conference League contenders Forest are said to be among the interested parties, as the Garibaldi are on the lookout for potential replacements for Manchester City-linked Morgan Gibbs-White.

However, Football Insider claims that Elliott has turned down the chance to join Nuno Espirito Santo's team, as the ex-Fulham starlet cannot see himself in the Portuguese's system.

Elliott has been at his best for Liverpool when given licence to roam on the right-hand side or number 10 position, while turning out for a team who tend to dominate possession.

As a result, the 22-year-old apparently feels that Forest's tendency to counter-attack and defend in a deep block would hinder his abilities, and he would not feel free to express himself in Santo's side.

Nevertheless, Elliott could still leave the Premier League champions before the transfer window closes, as his playing situation is unlikely to improve in the 2025-26 campaign.

Mohamed Salah will be staying for another two years following his contract extension, while Florian Wirtz will add competition both in the number 10 role and on the left-hand side of the attack.

Elliott has two years left to run on his contract at Liverpool, whom he has registered 15 goals and 20 assists for in 147 matches in all tournaments since joining their academy ranks in 2019.

Elliott came up with five goals and three assists in 28 appearances in the 2024-25 season, in which he spent three months out with a broken foot between September and November.

If Liverpool also manage to sign a new striker alongside Wirtz this summer, Slot's front four should pick itself next season, as Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wirtz support the fresh face up front.

Several high-profile attackers would therefore have to accept backup roles, but there should at least be a couple of attacking departures in the coming weeks, as no fewer than six players' futures are uncertain, including Elliott.

Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez are both being targeted by Saudi Pro League sides, while Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa could also be tempted by offers from elsewhere after difficult 2024-25 seasons.

In addition, Slot has supposedly been left unconvinced by Cody Gakpo, who is now on the radar of a Bundesliga giant.
