Report: Newcastle get green light as £25m target on the end of snub

Newcastle United are on the hunt for new players and James McAtee has been linked with a move to the club.

After having failed to sign any first-team ready new players since the summer of 2023, Newcastle United look open for business once again.

Newcastle could spend £150million this summer as Eddie Howe looks to get into a position where he can challenge for domestic honours all while balancing a Champions League campaign.

The squad needs depth. Howe worked miracles this season but cannot be expected to do so again. McAtee, naturally, is just one of the names being linked with a move to St James’ Park.

Newcastle could replace Joe Willock with McAtee, with the Toon midfielder being linked with a move away.

Now, there has been a development.

James McAtee set to be snubbed from Man City’s Club World Cup squad

The 22-year-old won’t travel to the Club World Cup with Manchester City in June and could instead play alongside Tino Livramento in the U21 European Championships which start later this summer.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the Etihad giants have now given the green light for their academy graduate to leave this summer.

It’s said that the England U21 international will command a transfer fee of around £25million and that there is interest from a number of Premier League clubs.

A move to Germany, however, is thought to appeal to the midfielder and Bayer Leverkusen are reportedly keen.

Newcastle United have secret agent in James McAtee pursuit

Livramento has been named in the England U21 squad alongside McAtee.

While the actual squad is yet to have been confirmed, both players form part of a pre-tournament training group who will be put through their paces in Slovakia.

Given the fact they both play for some of the Premier League’s biggest clubs, it feels reasonable to assume they will both be in the final squad when it is confirmed early next month.

Hopefully, Livramento can inform McAtee about just how good life at Newcastle is. Clearly a talented player, there’s little shame in not being able to break into the City first-team on a regular basis.

If he’s available for a move at a reasonably cheap price, Newcastle could do worse than looking at signing him…
