Retirements in football are something that are inevitable, yet natural.

We see them year on year with different players, different personalities and different legends taking a permanent step back from the playing side of football.

Yet, some retirements and goodbyes can hurt fans feelings more than others, especially when a player has been with a club for a long period of time.

Over the years, Manchester United has seen many of its legends retire. Whether it’s Beckham, Neville, Giggs or someone else, their announcements have created great shock and reflection within a fanbase. Even this season, the news that Christian Eriksen would leave United brought with it a period of reflection

This is why news that 3 time Premier League winner Jonny Evans may come as a shock to many football fans – whether they are supporters of Manchester United or not.

Evans’ Journey

Evans had been seen as the one who got away for many United fans following his departure from the club in 2015. This is why news that Evans had returned to the club following the conclusion of the 2022/23 season came to be a pleasant surprise to many supporters.

Since returning to the club, the 37 year old has managed to play 30 games spanning across 2 seasons and has played vital roles in many important games.

This includes the 2024 FA Cup Final where the centre-back played his part in United’s 2-1 win over local rivals Manchester City. This subsequently meant that Evans had won every trophy possible with the Red Devils, with Premier League and Champions League winners medals alongside the winning of other tournaments coming in the Northern Irish man’s first spell with the club.

Evans will leave his professional career having achieved everything a young aspiring footballer could dream of. Captain, leader, winner. The defender leaves the footballing world with respect from all corners of the industry and will be forever remembered at Manchester United – both in his first and second spells.
