FC Zurich have announced on their official website the hiring of an ex-Manchester United assistant manager as their new manager.
This comes at a time of change within the club with the dismissal of their previous manager Ricardo Moniz only falling 4 days ago.
The club currently sit 8th in the Super League in Switzerland having played 33 games – 5 less than most teams around them who have played 38.
Zurich are known within Switzerland for success having won the Super League 13 times across their history whilst also finishing as runners up on 9 occasions. However, their last title fell in the 2021-22 season, 3 seasons ago.
As well as this, they have won the Swiss Cup 10 times and the Swiss League Cup once.
New manager Mitchell van der Gaag, the long term assistant of Erik Ten Hag and former assistant manager of United, will be hoping to bring success back to the club having coached at Ajax as well as United.
van der Gaag comes to Zurich off the back of success with United having won the EFL Cup and FA Cup with the Red Devils during his time as assistant manager.
Even with the majority of his coaching career being based in an assistant manager capacity, the former PSV player does have experience in a main coaching role having stepped in whilst at United for Erik Ten Hag during his suspension in November 2023.
Furthermore, van der Gaag left the Red Devils to take up a new head coach position at another club which arguably has helped to build his head coaching skills and experience up.
The new Zurich manager came into the coaching world off the back of a successful playing career which saw the Dutchman play for PSV as well as Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr.
