Celtics may steal former Lakers prize this summer in potential trade idea

[Greg Swartz of Bleacher Report](https://bleacherreport.com/articles/25198303-3-dream-trade-targets-every-nba-team-summer) recently compiled a list of ‘dream’ trade targets for every team in the NBA, and he listed Charlotte Hornets big man Mark Williams as one for the Boston Celtics. The Los Angeles Lakers snagged Williams at the trade deadline this past year, but the deal was rescinded after health concerns popped up.

With the incoming big-man problems the Celtics may face next season, adding a center as talented as Williams (and as young as Williams) could be an intriguing move. However, it’s one that comes with more problems than solutions, despite the fact that it would be in spite of the Lakers.

A deal just wouldn’t be worth it.

**A Mark Williams trade is a bad idea for the Celtics**

-------------------------------------------------------

There’s a reason the Lakers trade fell through. Even if the injuries LA sighted don’t prove to be long-term, Williams’ career has been plagued with injuries since he entered the league.

In his three NBA seasons, Williams has yet to crack the 50-game mark. In fact, he’s only appeared in 77 games throughout the course of his entire three-year career.

Boston already has plenty of injury issues they are dealing with at the moment. From Jayson Tatum’s ruptured Achilles to Jaylen Brown’s partially torn meniscus to Kristaps Porzingis’ illness, they don’t need another injury-prone player on the roster adding to that list.

Then there’s the matter of cost. The Lakers gave up Dalton Knecht, Cam Reddish, and draft capital in order to get Williams. The Celtics don’t exactly have an offer that could compare to that, unless they are sending Kristaps Porzingis or Jrue Holiday to Charlotte, and neither of those guys really makes sense for the Hornets right now.

That means Boston would likely have to ship out someone like Sam Hauser, as well as draft picks, in order to bring Williams on board, and that’s not a smart trade.

In theory, having a guy like Williams on the roster would be perfect. He’s an impressive defender, a great rebounder, and an elite lob threat. But he’s never on the court. More than anything, the Celtics need guys they can depend on to be on the floor. Williams isn’t that guy right now.

So, while [adding a center on the trade market](https://hardwoodhoudini.com/boston-celtics-chicago-bulls-kristaps-porzingis-solution-one-hurdle-nikola-vucevic-trade-rumors) could be a smart idea for Boston (depending on who they select in the NBA Draft), Williams shouldn’t be a top target of theirs.

If he were completely healthy, he would totally make sense as a dream trade target. But he’s not. So he isn’t.
