Would-be Kyle Pitts trade would make 49ers offense totally unfair

The Atlanta Falcons are reportedly receiving calls about tight end Kyle Pitts.

This, according to Fox Sports NFL insider Jordan Schultz, who added the Falcons aren't necessarily looking to offboard their first-round NFL Draft choice from 2021 but might at least entertain offers.

Now, it's unclear whether or not the San Francisco 49ers have been one of those teams interested. From the surface, probably not, especially considering they already boast the best all-around tight end in football, George Kittle, who recently inked a contract extension that helps ensure he spends his entire career in the Bay Area.

But, it's not hard to imagine a Niners offense featuring both Kittle and Pitts.

In fact, if San Francisco somehow figured out how to land the latter from Atlanta, head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense would be oh-so dynamic.

Kyle Pitts to 49ers would be pure excitement (even if it's not likely to happen)

Shanahan has long flirted with having two elite-level tight ends, and the head coach spent years trying to land a quality No. 2 to pair with Kittle. While the 49ers have largely given up on such hopes, the opportunity to land Pitts might be too good to give up.

Granted, the fourth-overall pick from the 2021 draft (taken one spot after the Niners used the No. 3 overall pick on quarterback Trey Lance) has been a massive disappointment aside from a promising 1,000-yard rookie campaign. Since then, Pitts has been more of a complementary piece and not a cornerstone, never cresting 700 yards in the years since, although frequent instability and changes at quarterback at within the coaching staff certainly hindered his development.

If there's one coach who could get the most out of the 24-year-old Pitts, though, it'd be Shanahan.

From San Francisco's perspective, adding the tight end would almost fully absolve the team's offseason loss of All-Pro wide receiver Deebo Samuel while also removing pressure from likely not having fellow wideout Brandon Aiyuk (knee) to begin the season.

Simply put, who cares if the 49ers' top two wide receivers, Jauan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall, are relatively unknown in wider NFL circles? Especially if Kittle and Pitts would comprise the tight end depth chart's first two spots.

Sure, the Niners aren't likely to take a swing of this kind at this stage in the offseason.

But, if they did and somehow landed Pitts at a reasonable cost, it'd practically be unfair for anyone facing San Francisco this season.
