After reaching the Western Conference Finals each of the last two seasons only to see their season end before an NBA Finals appearance, the Minnesota Timberwolves appear destined to make a big move to potentially get over the hump next season.
Anthony Edwards has proven to be a true No. 1 scorer on a championship-caliber team. Or at least a team that is on the verge of being championship-caliber.
Throughout the 2024 playoffs, Julius Randle had his moments where he was a very solid No. 2 scoring option as a complementary piece to Edwards.
But there were also moments, particularly in the Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder, where it looked like the Timberwolves were in desperate need of a more established scoring option alongside Edwards.
The Timberwolves appear to agree that Edwards may need some help in the scoring department. According to Ashish Mathur of Hoops Wire, the Timberwolves are expected to pursue a potential trade with the Phoenix Suns to potentially bring in Kevin Durant this offseason.
This perhaps shouldn’t be all that much of a shock considering the Timberwolves attempted to trade for Durant back in February at the NBA trade deadline, but ultimately were not able to come to a deal that pleased the Suns.
Considering the Suns are coming off another disappointing year where they failed to hit expectations, perhaps they are now a bit more likely to move off of Durant.
On paper, Durant certainly hasn’t appeared to lose all that much of a step, averaging 26.6 points per game this past season. So he would truly be a very intriguing option to pair alongside Edwards moving forward.
