Former Celtics Big Man on the Trade Block to Begin Offseason

Few decision-makers in the NBA understand when to part ways with players better than [de facto Boston Celtics general manager Brad Stevens](https://chowderandchampions.com/brad-stevens-gives-jaylen-brown-update-celtics-weigh-roster-changes-01jvn714sg1p).

During his executive tenure, Stevens has consistently moved on from several Celtics at the right time, recouping assets at the height of their trade value. Talking about the business side of basketball may seem harsh, but the reality is that to build a sustainable winner, front offices have to make these tough but necessary decisions at the right time.

Boston's decision to trade Robert Williams III was one of those moments. After putting his body on the line for the Celtics throughout his five years in Beantown, Williams was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers in the move [that brought Jrue Holiday to Boston](https://chowderandchampions.com/celtics-perfect-trade-projected-jrue-holiday-deal-01jwkbekv3p8).

While a fresh start can help some players, than hasn't been the case for the ex-Boston rebounder.

Williams hasn't been able to reach the heights he saw as a Celtic since leaving town. He hasn't been the same since he underwent surgery to repair the torn meniscus in his left knee in the 2022 offseason. During his first season in Portland, he suffered a patellar dislocation on his right knee, requiring him to undergo surgery again.

Due to various lower-body injuries and ailments, "Time Lord" has only been able to suit up in 61 games over the last three seasons. When he's available, he can still be effective as a rim protector, rebounder, and versatile defender. Those times he suits up, however, have been too few and far between.

That is why his future in Portland remains uncertain.

Williams is on an expiring deal that pays him $13.2 million for the 2025-26 season. The Blazers are reportedly trying to trade him because they are an expensive team despite still being in rebuilding mode. Finding a team that will willingly take on that salary, however, will be a challenge.

One way for Williams to find a new team is if the Blazers get a similarly bad contract in return. They could perhaps get additional draft compensation in return, making it worth their while. Otherwise, the former beloved Celtics figure will remain on the trade block until he proves that he can stay healthy for an extended period.
