Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand bowed out of his punditry role with TNT Sports following the Champions League final on Saturday. The 46-year-old confirmed in the build-up to the elite European showpiece that he would be leaving at the end of his contract, which concludes this summer.

The former defender went out on a high after Paris Saint-Germain cruised to victory on a historic night in Munich. Desire Doue scored twice and provided an assist in a 5-0 win over Inter Milan.

Ferdinand has become one of the most recognisable figures since making the transition from his professional playing career to punditry.

Sources said that the two parties part ways amicably and on good terms, with the door being kept ajar for future opportunities.

In light of Ferdinand's departure, it's understood that the broadcaster is happy with the on-air team but are looking for the best pundits of the highest calibre.

Signing off for the show, Laura Woods said: It's been amazing here tonight, obviously Paris Saint-Germain, it is their night but Rio, just one final goodbye from us here at TNT Sports, it's the end of your career here for now. Can I just say on behalf of everyone, you've been an absolute pleasure.

"Since I came here, you have been incredibly welcoming. You'll be sorely missed."

He responded: "I just wanted to say thank you, thank you to everyone I've worked with.

"My job has been made easier with the people I've worked with, great friends who will remain friends for many years.

"As important are the people you see on the screen, the people behind it that do all the jobs to get us here are all appreciated.

"Thank you to everyone.

"All the beers are on me," he concluded after sharing a joke with Steven Gerrard.

In his announcement, he confirmed that he would be focusing on other projects and business interests in a hint over what his next move will be.

"Since retiring from football, it has been a privilege talking about the game I love for a decade for sports fans watching BT Sport and TNT Sports," he said in a statement published on his X account.

"I want to acknowledge the tremendous support from the team behind the scenes, whose hard work often goes unseen but has been essential to our success.

"As I turn the page to the next chapter, I carry with me countless memories.

"I am excited about what the future holds, spending more time with my family, focusing on Rio Ferdinand Presents and my other business interests.

"I hope to stay connected with you all in different capacities.

"Thank you once again for everything!"
