The first period of the summer transfer window is now open for business
Manchester United and Manchester City can officially complete any early transfer business with the first part of the summer window now open.
Due to the FIFA Club World Cup, the transfer window has opened today (Sunday, June 1) and will close again on Tuesday, June 10. It will remain closed for just six days before re-opening again on Monday, June 16 and will remain open until deadline day on Monday, September 1.
United have been eyeing a number of players as they look to rebuild their fortunes under Ruben Amorim while after a busy January, City are again out to strengthen their ranks under Pep Guardiola as they look to win back the Premier League title.
The two Manchester clubs have been some of the biggest spenders in the Premier League in the last decade, as we look at how their spend has compared to their rivals in that time.
Man Utd and Man City 10-year Premier League net spend
Since the 2015-16 season, United’s transfer net spend has totalled a massive £1.047bn while City’s has also been on the higher end of the scale with £874m in the same period. Last summer, United signed the likes of Manuel Ugarte, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Joshua Zirkzee while selling Scott McTominay, Mason Greenwood and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
The top five most expensive signings in the club’s history have come in the last decade, with Paul Pogba, Antony, Harry Maguire, Jadon Sancho and Romelu Lukaku joining on mega-money deals. Three of those players are still at United but Antony and Sancho have spent time out on loan this season and both are expected to move on this summer.
United’s record sale remains Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit to Real Madrid but they had been able to sell Lukaku to Inter Milan for a fee close to what they paid back in 2020. However, their net spend is so high because they have only ever sold three players for more than £50m.
For, Manchester City - Jack Grealish is their record signing after joining from Aston Villa in the summer of 2021. Josko Gvardiol is another who sits in their top five as does Kevin de Bruyne, Omar Marmoush and Ruben Dias. Their record sale happened last summer as Julian Alvarez headed for Atletico Madrid.
