Arsenal transfer roundup: Sesko, Sane and Zubimendi latest

In this new transfer window series, VAVEL looks to bring all of the latest and most reliable news regarding Arsenal.

The Gunners are set for a busy window, but what rumours have been circulating around the club in the past week?

Arsenal’s number 9 search is in full swing. Rumours have circulated that the club have begun talks with RB Leipzig over the transfer of Benjamin Sesko from Germany to North London.

Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany reported that executives of both teams, Marcel Schäfer and Andrea Berta, met in London to discuss the transfer. What Plettenberg goes on to say is that it remains ‘unclear’ if the Gunners can afford the deal with Sesko’s release clause set at over €80 million.

An exciting time for Arsenal fans around the world as the eternal ridicule for not having an out-and-out forward looks set to cease sometime soon. With the pursuit of Sesko gathering momentum, it would suggest that Viktor Gyokeres is not the priority at the moment.

Sesko has always been rumoured as **Mikel Arteta**’s preference to fill the number 9 role, and the head coach is seemingly getting his way.

Rumours report that Leroy Sane could make his return to the Premier League this summer as his contract comes to an end at Bayern Munich. The 29-year-old starred as an explosive winger for Manchester City between 2016 and 2019 before a torn ACL blighted his final campaign with the club.

Mikel Arteta was part of the coaching staff when the winger was with the Citizens, and he could be a reinforcement for **Arsenal**this summer to add to their firepower. A disastrous loan for former City forward Raheem Sterling could caution the club from going for the player. But if he were able to mimic the magic that dazzled spectators at the Etihad Stadium, he would lift the level of the attack.

🚨 Arsenal agree deal to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, here we go! ❤️🤍

Martin Zubimendi is all but an Arsenal player, with **Fabrizio Romano**’s signature “here we go” confirming the move earlier this month. The Gunners have tracked the Spanish international since last summer, and with Jorginho now officially gone, the timing makes perfect sense.

Arsenal ended the 2024/25 season bottom of the league for passes and touches through central areas, which is exactly where Zubimendi does most of his work. The Real Sociedad midfielder operates primarily in the centre circle and left half-space, offering composure and control in zones where Arsenal have lacked presence.

Unlike Declan Rice, whose strengths lie more in ball-winning and carrying, Zubimendi excels at receiving from centre-backs, turning under pressure, and progressing play through the lines, responsibilities that have often fallen to Martin Ødegaard when Rice has struggled in build-up. With Zubimendi anchoring the buildup phase, the Arsenal captain should be free to operate higher up the pitch and focus on unlocking defences in the final third.

Long-term Arsenal target Joan García is now in 'very advanced' talks with Barcelona, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The 24-year-old shot-stopper was heavily linked to the Gunners last summer and throughout the last few weeks, with an alleged release clause of £21m to secure his services.

However, despite rumours of Aston Villa keeping a close eye, LaLiga champions Barcelona are close to agreeing a deal to prise the Spaniard away from local rivals RCD Espanyol.

Arsenal will need to dive into the transfer market for a goalkeeper with Norberto Neto's loan coming to an end from Bournemouth.

Jorginho - Midfielder

After two and a half seasons at Arsenal, Jorginho will be leaving North London this summer. The Italian midfielder will become a Flamengo player, participating in the inaugural format of the revised Club World Cup in June.

Despite not featuring heavily during his time with the Gunners, Jorginho was reportedly a pivotal figure within the dressing room and often made second-half cameos to ensure Mikel Arteta’s side secured the three points.

Perhaps the former Chelsea midfielder’s best Arsenal moment came in the Gunners’ 4-2 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park. Jorginho struck home a long-range effort with minutes to go as his shot cannoned off the crossbar and into the net via the head of Emiliano Martinez. That split-second made Arsenal fans believe that their side could win the Premier League for the first time in nearly a decade.

Jorginho was the definition of a model professional during his time at the Emirates Stadium. Flamengo have got their hands on a gem of a player.
