17-goal Man Utd transfer target 'spotted' outside Lowry Hotel, Arsenal wanted him in January

Manchester United are closing in on their first signing of the 2025 summer transfer window.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Wolverhampton Wanderers star Matheus Cunha was spotted outside The Lowry Hotel on Sunday morning.

The 26-year-old has since departed to catch his flight to South America for international duty.

Despite United lacking the lure of European football next campaign, Cunha is eager to secure a move to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils will trigger his £62.5 million release clause and are expected to pay the fee in instalments over two years.

Cunha would be a standout addition to a misfiring United squad that struggled for goals during the 2024–25 campaign.

Wolves endured a poor season but the Brazilian starred with 17 goals and six assists.

Many top clubs, including Arsenal, showed strong interest in signing him in January, but he chose to stay loyal to Wolves and helped them retain their Premier League status.

Liverpool have recently announced the arrival of Jeremie Frimpong and Chelsea are nearing a move for Liam Delap.

United have to move faster and wrap up their first signing so that they can focus on other targets.

Cunha will bring added creativity and goal-scoring threat to the attack, though manager Ruben Amorim is also targeting a new centre-forward.

Amorim sets up his side in a 3-4-2-1 formation. Cunha thrived in the same set-up under Vitor Pereira in the left number 10 position.

His ball-carrying ability is another key asset that could help United transition swiftly from defence to attack.

Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have been dismal in front of goal, and reinforcements are urgently needed.

United have to operate with a tight budget but their spending powers could be boosted by offloading loanees Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia.
