The New York Jets might not be done building their 2025 coaching staff, and a familiar name could still be in play.
Former NFL head coach Todd Haley confirmed in an interview with Jake Asman on SiriusXM Mad Dog Sports Radio on Wednesday that he had conversations with Jets head coach Aaron Glenn about potentially joining the team’s staff. While Haley ultimately wasn’t hired, he made it clear that the door remains open.
That possibility should intrigue Jets fans, and perhaps the organization itself. One notable omission on Glenn’s first-year staff is a veteran offensive mind.
The defense is in good hands with Steve Wilks and several experienced assistants, but the offensive side is anchored by first-time play-caller Tanner Engstrand and supported by pass game coordinator Scott Turner, whose recent resume is uneven at best.
If the Jets are serious about supporting their young offensive staff, and potentially quarterback Justin Fields, revisiting the Haley conversation might make more sense than ever.
The NY Jets could still add Todd Haley to Aaron Glenn's coaching staff
Haley’s potential addition to the staff would provide exactly what the Jets currently lack, that being proven offensive leadership. While Glenn has surrounded himself with veteran minds on defense, including respected coordinator Steve Wilks, the offensive staff remains relatively unproven.
The aforementioned Engstrand will be calling plays for the first time in his career. Turner brings coordinator experience, but hasn’t held that role in a full-time capacity since 2022. There’s no true offensive “CEO” on the staff, no one with head coaching experience or a proven track record.
That’s what makes the Haley link so compelling. He has over two decades of NFL coaching experience, including six seasons as an offensive coordinator and three as a head coach.
He’s worked with everyone from Kurt Warner and Larry Fitzgerald to Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown. For a young offense still trying to find its footing, especially with a quarterback like Fields, having someone like Haley in the building could be a massive asset.
And the good news for hopeful fans is that Haley left the door open for a potential union with Glenn and the Jets in the future.
"I know Aaron [Glenn] very well; we talked a bunch at different times leading up to it. It was just one of those things that didn’t work out for now, and that’s fine."
Todd Haley
His response certainly didn’t slam the door shut. In fact, the way Haley phrased it made it sound like something could still happen down the line. The Jets may be waiting to see how Engstrand performs in his new role, but the need for a veteran stabilizer in that room remains obvious.
There’s no harm in letting the current structure play out. But if the offense sputters early, or if Glenn decides he wants a seasoned voice alongside Engstrand, it’s hard to imagine a more qualified, more logical name than Todd Haley.
