Now, it’s no surprise that the Reds are revisiting some names from the past.
Liverpool’s interest isn’t always loud. But it’s consistent.
Even if a player doesn’t make the move early, the club keeps the door open.
They keep watching. And sometimes, the player notices.
In a competitive European market where young talents are being snapped up fast, patience is sometimes Liverpool’s best move.
That’s exactly what’s playing out again with one player they brought in for a trial years ago—who now confirms they never stopped watching him.
20-year-old Swedish striker Momodou Sonko, now at KAA Gent, revealed in an interview with Expressen that Liverpool are still keeping tabs on him.
Sonko, who began at BK Häcken, scored 14 goals and provided 8 assists in 44 games before making a €7 million move to Belgium in January 2024.
Back in 2017, when Sonko was still in his early teens, he had a trial at Liverpool.
He admitted he wasn’t ready back then. “I felt I was a little too young to move, but they have continued to keep an eye on me,” he said.
Sonko is aware of the club’s recent success too.
Speaking about Liverpool’s form, he said, “They have been superior in the Premier League.”
“They looked very strong in the Champions League too before they had a tough match at PSG. It has been an incredibly good season. A very good debut season for the coaches too.”
While his minutes at Gent have mostly come off the bench, Liverpool clearly see long-term potential.
It fits their model. Sonko’s name may not be the loudest, but the Reds are watching—and he knows it.
