Champions League hero now has Real Madrid fans questioning the club’s judgment

For obvious reasons (the guy in charge), Real Madrid fans wouldn't have stayed up to watch PSG's celebrations after winning their first Champions League trophy. However, the manager aside, it was nice to see a former Real Madrid player be involved in the French club's history.

Achraf Hakimi has been a pivotal player in PSG's side this season. The full-back has improved leaps and bounds since leaving Real Madrid as a youngster and now, he's won his first Champions League since leaving Real Madrid.

Of course, Hakimi is a Champions League winner already with Real Madrid. However, it's fair to say that he had a stronger involvement in the Champions League win with PSG and, while this hurts to say, it probably meant more to him.

Achraf Hakimi is a former Real Madrid player, but not one that's hated by Real Madrid fans. Instead, Real Madrid fans cheer from afar, with perhaps a subtle hope that he'll return one day.

Champions League hero has Real Madrid fans questioning judgment

An interesting discussion on Reddit had Real Madrid fans pondering what could have been had Achraf Hakimi stayed at Real Madrid. In fact, the title of the post dubbed Hakimi as "the one that got away."

Naturally, the conversation was divided. Those emotional Real Madrid fans called out the club for not sticking by him, with one Redditor even claiming, "Hakimi and Theo Hernandez never got their chance with Real. Both are class players." If Hakimi had got his chance at Real Madrid, who knows what could've happened?

On the other hand, most fans applied logic. While fans can be gutted that Hakimi never got a chance to prove himself, context also matters. Hakimi was competing for a spot with Dani Carvajal, one of Real Madrid's best players of all-time.

Redditors claimed, "unfortunately he wasn't gonna stay and at best be rotational with Carvajal" and "He was never going to displace Carvajal."

This is all one big bundle of "what ifs?" Hakimi was the right player at the wrong time. If he'd have come through the Real Madrid academy a few seasons ago, we might be looking at him as the long-term replacement for Dani Carvajal and Trent wouldn't even be in the picture.

However, that's not the case. What's done is done.
