‘Very advanced’ – Fabrizio Romano claims Newcastle ‘target’ looks set to join Barcelona

The summer transfer window is officially open and it’ll be split up into a few sections.

The first ‘window’ is from June 1st to 10th, before a six-day break for the Club World Cup. Then, teams will look to sort out their PSR situations in the second half of June, with the 16th to 30th covering the final two weeks of this financial period.

Over July and all of August, things will no doubt heat up once again as we build towards the start of the 2025/26 Premier League season.

One name who has been regularly linked over the past fortnight is Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia. So much of the talk has come from the Spanish press and there has been several reports from Spain suggesting he’s destined for Newcastle.

However, it seems we had the right idea taking those claims with an initial pinch of salt, with reports last night indicating that he’s heading elsewhere.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona are now closing in on a move for Joan Garcia.

It was never clear if Newcastle were REALLY in the mix for Garcia this summer. Much of the Spanish media said so and that noise was never matched by North East reporters closer to the club, even if the i’s Mark Douglas did confirm there was some interest from Tyneside in a recent tweet.

Either way, Romano claims that a deal between Garcia and the La Liga giants is now ‘very advanced’, with a £21m release clause also allowing Barca to progress a deal quickly.

Romano does state that Premier League clubs are in the mix – Newcastle, Arsenal and Aston Villa have all been linked – but it seems he’s staying in Spain, putting an end to a Toon transfer rumour that’s largely been driven by overseas journalists jumping the gun.

News that Garcia won’t be arriving at Newcastle only adds to the feeling that Burnley’s James Trafford is the man Eddie Howe wants as a young, ball-playing contender for Nick Pope’s position.

We ha a £16m bid rejected for the England talent last summer and The Mail’s Craig Hope insists that he remains our top target.

In fact, he reported just a few days ago that Newcastle are expected to formalise their interest soon by submitting an opening bid for the £30m-rated stopper.

It won’t be easy to land the 22-year-old, who is a wanted man after a record-breaking season in the Championship. Burnley won’t sell easily after promotion, although there has been suggestions that he’s keen on a move to St James’ Park, which could be a factor if we can strike a deal with the Clarets.
