Stark contrasts as former Hammers’ favourite now without a club

[Claret and Hugh’](https://www.claretandhugh.info/west-ham-transfer-blunder-the-could-get-very-awkward/)s article this morning regarding the rapid rise in value of **Divin Mubama** highlights the minefield that is the transfer market. Largely because he couldn’t get game time, Mubama rejected a new contract at West Ham last year and left for Manchester City with the Hammers receiving a ‘modest’ £2 million compensation. If the rumours are true, the young striker could now end up playing European football should he be sold on to Lille for five times that amount.

Contrast this with another, lower profile story on the same day, confirming that West Bromwich Albion had announced they’d released former Hammer **Grady Diangana** at the end of his contract.

After an £18 million purchase from West Ham and six years at the Baggies, Diangana has never really lived up to his big ( for 2020) price tag and his £20,000 a week wages is pretty huge for the championship club to keep finding without a sniff at promotion. So at 27 years old he’s looking for another club.

When West Ham sold Diangana there was universal outrage that wasn’t just confined to the fan base: It seemed that Diangana was a fan favourite and even Captain Mark Noble took to his own social media account with a post that was very critical of the decision to sell: “_As captain of this football club I’m gutted, angry and sad that Grady has left, great kid with a great future”_ Noble wrote, risking the wrath of his own Club in the process.

Diangana may yet have the last laugh, with reports of Premier League interest from Leeds and Wolves: Deciding when to ‘stick’ and when to ‘twist’ with young talent is a thankless task for any club chairman. Most recently Kamarai Swyer has been released without a fee: Any of these decisions can come back to bight a club on the backside. And nobody remembers all the good, sensible decisions to release players: They just remember the ones that the club gets wrong.
