'The journey is just incredible' - Town skipper Morsy backs Wardley to make history

Unbeaten Ipswich heavyweight Wardley (18-0-1, 17KO), squares off with Australian heavyweight champ Justis Huni (12-0, 7KO) for the WBA interim heavyweight title next weekend, in what is the first boxing event ever held at Town's famous ground.

And Morsy, the man who led Town to remarkable back-to-back promotions from League One into the Premier League, sees parallels between that achievement and what Wardley is hoping to do.

“It’s once in a lifetime stuff isn’t it?" he enthused. "Fab started really late, did white collar, the journey is just incredible – similar to our journey in the back-to-back, doing something which doesn’t usually happen.

“So it will be a tremendous experience and I’m buzzing for him.”

"It’s going to be an historic event and historic moment for him.

"I used to box as a kid, I had an amateur fight and won, back in the day. I enjoyed it, boxing as a kid every summer – six weeks' holiday and I’d be in the boxing gym.

“So I really enjoyed it, I enjoy watching it and it’s amazing to see Fab do his thing as part of the Ipswich family – and hopefully he wins!”

Wardley will be backed by thousands of fans on Saturday, many who also follow the Blues - and Morsy said they can help roar their hometown hero to victory.

“We need them there really, need their voices," he stressed. "The way they’ve supported us this season has been incredible and this is an opportunity to support a local lad to victory.”

As skipper, Morsy has had to give plenty of rousing dressing room speeches ahead of games in his time.

But, asked what he'd say to Wardley as he prepares to make the walk on Saturday, he kept it simple.

Wardley, a huge Town fan who wears the club badge into the ring and on his fight shorts, said he's grateful for the support of everyone associated with the Blues.

“The support of the club as a whole is something that’s hard to put into words," he explained.

"It’s not just been the odd player here or there, or the odd staff member, everyone around the club has been so supportive and invested in me, wanting this to come off in the years beforehand.

“From the players to everyone that’s around the club and Mark (Ashton) himself, who has been a massive advocate and massive pusher of pulling this off… ultimately this doesn’t come together without him being keen on it and him really wanting it to go ahead.

“So I could not be more thankful to him and the club as whole for their backing, their support – and ultimately just, at the crux of it, looking after one of their own.

“And I think that’s the strong ethos of this club. We support and get behind our own.”

Asked for a message to the fans who will be there on Saturday, Wardley said: “I think in the most simple of terms, I want to say thank you.

“Without them, their support and them wanting to give me their backing, this wouldn’t be coming off.

“It’s all good and well everyone at the club wanting it to happen and me and my team, but also we need the support of the fans.

“They’ve come out in droves and have done for years, and it’s all culminated into this massive event.

“And also it’s a bit of a thank you to them, to say thanks for the years of travelling up and down the country coming to watch me fight – here’s something that’s on your doorstep, in front of you, come along and support.”
