‘Gets all the attention…’: One Wolves player was eager to snub Matheus Cunha in end-of-season…

Matheus Cunha collected Wolves’ Player of the Season award, but the Brazilian was snubbed by one teammate for another prize.

There were no surprises when Cunha was unveiled as the Wolves squad’s pick for Player of the Season.

That being said, the 26-year-old was not selected for the Supporters’ Player of the Season award, as Joao Gomes claimed the prize.

This was less surprising as Cunha has ruffled the feathers of Wolves fans this term due to his openness when discussing his desire to leave the club.

Matt Doherty snubs Matheus Cunha with his pick for goal of the season

After a lengthy and tedious transfer saga, Manchester United unveiled Cunha as their first signing of the summer transfer window.

The forward leaves Wolves after two and a half years of service, joining Ruben Amorim’s side in transition.

Though the Old Gold will have a task to replace Cunha’s brilliance, there remains a host of talent within Vitor Pereira’s squad, with one player picked ahead of the Brazilian in an end-of-season discussion.

Speaking on the Wolves Express podcast, Matt Doherty decided to snub his former teammate for goal of the season, selecting Jean-Ricner Bellegarde for a reason beyond his strike being better.

“JJ’s [Bellegarde] vs Forest, Cunha’s got a few. Let’s give it to JJ just because Cunha gets all the attention in here, so we’ll give JJ a shout.”

The attention Cunha had been getting for his individual highs this season prompted Doherty to shine the light on another teammate.

Bellegarde’s strike against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground was Doherty’s pick for goal of the season, opting to put Cunha’s list of strikes aside to put the spotlight on someone else.

Wolves players agree on Manchester United results being the best of the season

Cunha has signed for Man United, a club that has been on the lips of the Wolves squad for reasons other than them poaching the Old Gold’s top goalscorer.

As well as selecting their choices for goal of the season, a select group of players were also asked to pick their game of the campaign, to which an almost unanimous vote emerged.

Dan Bentley, Toti Gomes, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Bellegarde and Doherty chose the games against Manchester United, as Wolves won both home and away.

Though Wolves beat Man United at Old Trafford, it was the Boxing Day result at Molineux that some players preferred.

“United at home around Christmas time, we were just starting to get our stuff together,” Doherty said, reminiscing on the fixture.

The players certainly enjoyed doing the double over the Red Devils in 2024/25 and will aim to do so next season too, this time against their former teammate.
