Tottenham News Speaking to Bryan King

Tottenham will be hopeful they can strike a favourable deal for Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku.

It would be the first direct transfer between the two London rivals in over 15 years, but it would make sense for both Premier League sides.

Tottenham’s awful league results have highlighted their desperate need for reinforcements this summer, especially with the added strain that UEFA Champions League football will bring next season.

The Blues will have similar needs after securing a top-five finish on the final day of the Premier League season, though they have a very different starting point given the size of their overinflated playing squad.

As such, they may be forced to take a loss on some of their less-favoured players, with Tottenham waiting in the wings.

Chelsea will have to settle for a cut-price fee for Nkunku

As reported by talkSPORT (29 May), Nkunku will leave Chelsea this summer and is open to remaining in the Premier League, with Tottenham enquiring.

Nkunku has fallen down the pecking order since his £52million arrival from RB Leipzig in June 2023, and with Chelsea looking likeliest to secure Liam Delap, the Blues will be even more incentivised to offload the France international.

The 27-year-old arrived with a glowing reputation, but a blend of injury problems and Cole Palmer’s emergence have stunted the former PSG player’s opportunities at Stamford Bridge.

It has been a disappointing move for both player and club, which ex-Spurs scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes could pave the way for his exit at a cut-price.

“I think Nkunku will be allowed to leave Chelsea,” King said.

“However, they’re going to lose a lot of money on this player. I can’t see anybody paying £52million for Nkunku, which is what Chelsea paid for him. He’s hardly established himself as a Premier League star.

“Chelsea will need to sanction a cut-price transfer for Nkunku, or maybe it’ll be a loan move. Whatever happens, they’ll need to get rid of him because the last thing you want is unhappy players in the dressing room.”

Nkunku’s role needs to be defined before Spurs pounce

Nkunku’s misfortune at Chelsea is not purely down to the player, but his inability to lock down a place in the starting lineup could point to potential red flags for Tottenham.

Enzo Maresca couldn’t figure out how to best utilise the forward, and while Ange Postecoglou may not be in charge of Spurs beyond the summer, he employs the same general formation as his Italian counterpart.

Spurs need to assess how the Frenchman would fit their style and their squad carefully before committing to the transfer, just because it looks good on paper.
