Liverpool transfer plans for Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez could be delayed

The summer transfer window is officially open, and Liverpool have wasted no time in bolstering their squad. The Reds have already secured the services of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, filling the gap left by Trent Alexander-Arnold's departure.

Florian Wirtz could also be making the move from Leverkusen to Liverpool, with discussions ongoing over a potential British-record £125 million transfer. Milos Kerkez of AFC Bournemouth is another target as Liverpool aim to reinforce their left-back options.

Clubs can officially register new players from Sunday, June 1, although this part of the split transfer window will only remain open for 10 days. This is due to the restructured Club World Cup this summer, which prevents signings from being made after 10 June.

Consequently, Liverpool have received around £10 million from Real Madrid for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is set to join his new team in time for the tournament. His contract with the Reds won't officially expire until 30 June.

This means that Manchester City and Chelsea - the Premier League's sole representatives in the event - can add players to their squads in the next 10 days who can participate this summer. However, the early window is open to all teams in the Premier League and Football League, not just those participating in the Club World Cup.

This implies that if Liverpool fail to secure deals for Wirtz and Kerkez before June 10, they will have to wait until June 16 to officially register them. The summer transfer window will then shut at 7 pm (BST) on September 1.

The deadline has been brought forward by four hours from the usual 11pm cut-off, with European leagues expected to follow suit to allow transfers to be conducted during standard working hours.
