Arsenal Marquinhos Departure: Marquinhos’ Time at Arsenal
Respected transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed the Arsenal Marquinhos departure, as the Brazilian winger is set to leave the Emirates after a frustrating time in North London. Marquinhos rose to prominence as a starlet and will have to rebuild his career elsewhere after getting very few opportunities from Mikel Arteta. The news comes as Arsenal look to trim their squad ahead of the 2025–26 term to compete on multiple fronts with a more streamlined squad full of experience.
Marquinhos joined Arsenal from São Paulo in summer 2022, with much fanfare around the then 19-year-old.The Gunners signed the Brazilian winger for a modest £3.3m, viewing him as a long-term project rather than an instant first-team regular. He got off to an encouraging start in the Europa League, scoring and assisting in his first start. Regular first-team game time, however, was scarce. With the likes of Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli flourishing in those wide areas, there was no place in Arteta’s thinking for Marquinhos.

To further the midfielder’s development, Arsenal loaned him Union City, and then Nantes. Neither stint produced the growth he needed, and the player struggled to adjust to the physical and tactical demands of European football.
Fabrizio Romano announced on social media that Marquinhos will depart Arsenal in the summer transfer window. Both the club and the player agree that a clean break is best. Romano also confirmed that clubs in Brazil and Europe have shown interest, and talks are already underway. Arsenal are open to a permanent transfer as well as a sell-on clause in any deal.
What It Means for Arsenal
The departure of Marquinhos for Arsenal, meanwhile, allows managers the clearance to trim the fat and make way for experienced or even meaning signings. Now that Champions League football has returned in earnest and the pressure is rising again, Arsenal want more players on their bench with a proven track record, not ongoing projects.
Marquinhos’s departure is, equally, a natural consequence of Arsenal’s emphasis on the sustained, strategic value of their transfer dealings — on purchasing youth, seeing how they turn out and taking the tough, pragmatic decision to release them if growth did not materialize as expected. It’s an indication of a maturing club that knows what it’s doing in the short-term and the long.

Marquinhos is still only 22 so he has plenty of time to rebuild his career. Returning to Brazil could give him a comfort zone to relaunch his career while reported interest from Portugal and the Netherlands indicates he won’t be short of suitors on the continent.
Author’s Opinion
Marquinhos’ move to Arsenal is the culmination of a brief, but interesting, period in the club’s history. His final years in North London did not go to plan; his departure is a sign of Arsenal demonstrating they want to have clear and progressive squads. This is a clean slate for Marquinhos — and another piece furthering Arsenal’s quest to build a team that is ready to compete at the top.
So while it is a little sad to see a player with so much promise struggle to find his place, football is sometimes about timing and fit. Marquinhos is not yet a lost cause but he does still have time on his side to find his form, his confidence elsewhere, maybe become the player Arsenal thought they were getting. For Arsenal, it is clear what they are looking for experience and with a bit more impact and this hard but necessary decision reflects the club’s evolving ambition, sharp strategy, and growing maturity.
