Rangers are interested in Russell Martin and should they hire him, Southampton will have one promotion favourite coach less to worry in the Championship.
In the final weeks of May, Southampton overcame their manager-needed status by instating Will Still to the coaching helm. Consequently, the Saints moved a step closer to beginning their actual transfer business but the same can't be said about their Championship rivals.
Most notably, promotion counterparts like Leicester City whom Southampton must better in the transfer market, so, as to finish above them next season. And since the Russell Martin speculations have come out, Southampton fans have started anticipating a tougher road to both the second division title as well as the direct promotion task.
And why won't they, when the same fanbase enthusiastically celebrated the Premier League jump alongside Martin.
However, no concrete decision has been made on Martin's future and going by his recent transfer links, that scary scenario might not even happen.
Martin's Scottish move will boost Saints Championship ambitions
As pointed out by Daily Record, Martin is in contention to return to his former club Rangers as their new gaffer.
Now, managing previous teams is an exciting prospect for every emerging tactician, thus, Martin will also want to try his coaching hand at his previous employers. Will he succeed there or not is a debatable thought but not one which the Saints should be engaging themselves.
It's because Southampton's Championship stint can become more of a cakewalk to the top position shall Martin stay away from any Championship assignments.
At least for the upcoming campaign, as the Scot's Premier League profile is enough to warn away any Premier League rivals from joining forces with him.
Hence, let's stay optimistic about Martin winning over the Rangers board, to best fuel Southampton's promotion charge.
