Liverpool youngster must avoid Sunderland return at all costs, Championship clubs should be ready - opinion

Sunderland are just two months away from making their return to the Premier League, and excitement is growing for supporters as they prepare for life back in the top flight.

It’s been eight years since the Black Cats were relegated to the Championship, and after seasons of hurt and pain (which included a spell in League One), the Wearsiders are finally back in the big time following Tommy Watson’s late Wembley winner in the play-off final.

Over a week has passed since the young midfielder, who officially joined Brighton on Sunday, found the back of the net in the 95th minute against Sheffield United, and plenty has happened at the Stadium of Light already, with Enzo Le Fee becoming the first signing of the summer.

However, there are now conversations surrounding the future of another loanee whose time at Sunderland was extremely forgettable.

In the January transfer window, there was a huge battle for the signature of Jayden Danns as Liverpool prepared to send the young striker out on loan to the Championship.

It was Sunderland who won that fight, but an injury that was seen during medical ended his campaign before it had even started with the Black Cats, and he failed to make an appearance for the club.

Despite this, The Northern Echo have reported that Liverpool may be willing to send the 19-year-old out on loan once again in 2025/26, and after strong relations were formed between the two clubs, the Wearsiders may be one of those with a chance of signing him.

Regis Le Bris has had multiple conversations with the teenager over the course of the last few months, and with Sunderland offering Premier League football, they may just find themselves in pole position for any deal.

Jayden Danns must seek a Championship move this summer

While the idea of playing in the top flight will be promising, the Black Cats already have plenty of options up front, and they will only look to improve on Wilson Isidor and Eliezer Mayenda, a player who praised Le Bris for his half-time actions at Wembley.

A move to the Championship would give the striker a better chance at playing regular football, and Liverpool boss Arne Slot will be keen to see him get consistent minutes in a lower division rather than watching on from the bench in the Premier League.

Any decision that will be taken will have to wait, with Danns set to be a part of the Reds’ pre-season tour of Asia and therefore he will have plenty of time to assess his options.

Sunderland will obviously be an exciting prospect, but a footballer’s career is longer than just one campaign, and he must decide what is the best option for his development, and the Black Cats are not that at this moment in time.
