Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister made a telling point about the team’s Premier League title success and underlined one of the key pillars behind Arne Slot’s successful side.
The Reds ended a five-year wait for the title in 2024/25 when they ended Manchester City’s four consecutive triumphs in emphatic style. Liverpool secured first place with four games remaining, as Slot began his premiership at Anfield by equalling Manchester United’s record of 20 top-flight titles.
The Dutchman built on the foundations left by Jurgen Klopp, but also put his own stamp on things, allowing Mohamed Salah more freedom, demanding his full-backs play more centrally and encouraging the team to have more control in possession.
Mac Allister, who played 35 league matches, was key to that. The 26-year-old formed a solid partnership with Ryan Gravenberch at the base of midfield that proved integral to Slot’s style of playing.
Reflecting on what he feels is the best campaign of his career, Mac Allister was keen to point out that Liverpool’s success is not based on his input or any individual, but the overall collective.
“To be honest, I’m really happy with the season I’ve had,” the World Cup winner told Liverpool’s club website. “And I’d say yes, I think I’m in the best period of my career. I enjoy it a great deal.
“Overall, I’d say it’s because I’m at such a big club here at Liverpool where I can show what I’m capable of. I think that’s the most significant thing.

“But I also say that for me, the most important thing is my teammates. Without them, I wouldn’t be anyone because I’m not an individual player.
“I’m not someone who will go past three or four players and score 20 goals a season.
“I really rely on my teammates and in this side I’ve found players who have helped me a great deal both in an attacking and defensive sense, so I’m hugely grateful to them.”

That balance to the team was key to Liverpool’s success in 2024-25 and is something the Reds will look to build on next term.
But it will be a new-look side that begins the defense of its title in August. Trent Alexander-Arnold has already departed, Caoihmin Kelleher looks set to join him after a deal worth up to £18 million ($24M) was agreed with Brentford.
Jeremie Frimpong’s arrival hints at more dynamism in the side, as does the possible arrival of Milos Kerkez on the opposite flank.
Florian Wirtz is also expected to arrive, plus other additions are anticipated in what looks set to be an intriguing transfer window.
