Report: Approach made for Newcastle player despite internal talks over new deal

As it stands, Callum Wilson is set to leave Newcastle United this summer.

Wilson has been a remarkable servant to Newcastle United, scoring 49 goals in 130 games since joining the club from Bournemouth.

Sadly, however, the forward’s body let him down on a number of occasions. The England international frequently struggled with injury and eventually lost his starting place to Alexander Isak.

Right now, his story on Tyneside looks to be complete. Wilson looked emotional after Newcastle’s final game of the season and a lack of appearances means he has not triggered a contract extension.

While Newcastle are in talks with Wilson over a new deal, it’s thought any fresh agreement would be based largely on incentives.

Leeds are interested in signing Wilson, so it’s worth seeing what the latest from Elland Road is, given the Toon would appear to be open to keeping the striker.

Leeds hold genuine interest in Callum Wilson

According to Leeds Live, the Yorkshire giants themselves aren’t briefing whether or not they’ve actually made an approach to sign the 33-year-old.

However, the interest is said to be genuine, and the report adds that an approach to his agents has in fact been made.

There are, however, no further details on what the deal they might offer looks like.

Naturally, it’s believed that Leeds are speaking to a lot of players right now as they prepare for life back in the Premier League.

Newcastle United’s Callum Wilson decision left fans baffled

There’s little doubt the forward has been an excellent signing for Newcastle. Without his goals during the Steve Bruce years, the club may have never been in a position to have been taken over by current owners PIF.

Were Newcastle to be playing in next season’s Conference League, there’d be some logic in keeping him. At that level, Wilson would surely back himself to flourish at this stage of his career, with all due respect.

However, they aren’t. Eddie Howe’s side will be in the Champions League, meaning there are no easier games on the schedule.

With that in mind, keeping Wilson would seem strange. Signing a new striker and letting William Osula develop feels a much better plan.

Indeed, Newcastle fans were shocked by the decision to offer Wilson a new contract, even if the arrangement would be on reduced terms.
