Lakers Among Favorites to Steal $42 Million Big Man From West Rival

The Los Angeles Lakers will be on the hunt for particular talents this summer to reconstruct their roster around Luka Doncic, which might also provide an opportunity to weaken one of the team's primary rivals in the Western Conference.

Forward Naz Reid of the Minnesota Timberwolves has one year remaining on his $42 million contract -- a player option for $15 million in 2025-26 -- and is likely to opt out and enter free agency this summer.

Should that happen, the Lakers are among the most likely landing spots for Reid, based on betting odds released by Bovada Sportsbook on Sunday, June 1.

“The Warriors are the favorites to land Naz Reid, per @BovadaOfficial,” the GSW Ball Report posted to X. “Golden State Warriors +175, Brooklyn Nets +220, Charlotte Hornets +285, Los Angeles Lakers +375, Toronto Raptors +525.”

The Lakers have similar needs to the Warriors, who Bovada listed as the most likely landing spot for Reid. Both teams need some more size on the interior in the form of a player who can connect from behind the 3-point line with regularity and keep the offense spaced for stars like Stephen Curry in Golden State and Doncic and LeBron James in L.A.

Reid, the NBA's 6th Man of the Year in 2023-24, averaged career highs in points (14.2), rebounds (6.0) and assists (2.3) per game last season. He also averaged 0.9 blocks per contest, which is tied for the second-best mark of his career in that category.

Reid was a key piece off of the bench for Minnesota in the franchise's first-round victory over the Lakers and second-round series win over Golden State. Some projections have Reid commanding as much as $20 million annually on a new deal this summer.
