Report: Liverpool set to 'demolish' British transfer record as staggering Florian Wirtz transfer fee emerges

Liverpool are preparing to do some big spending in order to retain their Premier League title next season.

The Reds have often been reluctant to match their rivals and part with big transfer fees on new players.

However, the Liverpool owners have also shown a willingness to fork out for what they believe to be the right signing if and when they are available.

Given the caution they often exercise in the market, some Liverpool supporters have grown to become frustrated with the way FSG operate.

But with the 2025 summer window now open, no one can accuse John Henry and his partners of being frugal this year. Liverpool are pushing to sign Florian Wirtz in what would be a quite enormous transfer for the Reds.

And while Liverpool are getting closer to adding Wirtz to their squad, it has been revealed exactly how much could be leaving the Anfield bank account.

Liverpool set to ‘demolish’ British transfer record

Although Liverpool have a reputation amongst supporters for being careful with their cash when it comes to signing players, they have a good track record when they do decide to go big.

The fees for Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker were both questioned at the time, but the two players have gone on to become Liverpool legends, comfortably justifying the outlays.

Darwin Nunez has been less of a success, but it’s also worth remembering that Liverpool pushed hard to sign Moises Caicedo for a whopping £110m in 2023.

Caicedo ultimately joined Chelsea for an initial £100m, with the Blues’ acquisition of Enzo Fernandez for £107m earlier that year currently holding the record for an amount paid by a British team for a single player.

Rank Player Fee From To When

1. Enzo Fernandez £107m Benfica Chelsea Jan 2023

2. = Moises Caicedo £100m Brighton Chelsea Aug 2023

2. = Declan Rice £100m West Ham Arsenal July 2023

2. = Jack Grealish £100m Aston Villa Man City Aug 2021

5. Romelu Lukaku £97.5m Inter Milan Chelsea Aug 2021

But according to The Daily Mail, Liverpool could now bump Fernandez and Caicedo down the list. They claim that the Reds are close to ‘demolishing’ the transfer record with their signing of Wirtz.

Liverpool reportedly offered £109m to sign the German last week, with Leverkusen said to be holding out for £126m.

It is claimed that ‘middle ground will be found quickly,’ which would put the deal somewhere around the £117-118m mark.

Bayer Leverkusen want two Liverpool stars

Although this is a phenomenal amount of money for Liverpool to shell out, there is still a chance the fee could be offset by a player going in the other direction.

There have been suggestions that Leverkusen are interested in a player exchange with Liverpool and according to a Sunday update from journalist Florian Plettenberg, that is definitely the case.

Taking to X, Plettenberg reports that Jarell Quansah and Harvey Elliott are catching the eye of the Bundesliga side.

“Bayer 04 Leverkusen have the idea to include Harvey Elliott or Jarell Quansah in the deal for Florian Wirtz,” says the reporter. There’s no final decision on this yet, but talks are ongoing.”

With Liverpool likely valuing both players at around £40m, this could yet have a significant impact on the value of the deal.
